UofL
Founded in 1798 as one of the nation's first city-owned, public universities, the University of Louisville (UofL) is a vital ecosystem that creates thriving futures for students, the community and society. UofL is one of only 79 universities in the United States to earn recognition by the Carnegie Foundation as both a Research 1 and a Community Engaged university and is proud to be ranked among the nation's best institutions for African American and LGBTQ+ students, as well as a designated Military-Friendly school. The institution is a producer of top scholars, including more than 150 Fulbright Scholarships awarded since 2003—more than all other Kentucky public institutions combined—and has earned international acclaim for groundbreaking discoveries in areas transplantation, cancer research, cardiac care and spinal cord injuries. UofL enrolls more than 23,000 students and offers undergraduate degrees in more than 50 fields of study, master’s degrees in over 75 areas, and doctoral degrees in over 35 disciplines. The university also is accredited to grant professional degrees in medicine, dentistry, and law.
Louisville, as a classroom
UofL contributes significantly to the economic, cultural, and intellectual life of the Louisville community. The city itself also serves as a classroom for UofL students, who benefit from internships and partnerships, as well as a wide range of community service opportunities. The magnitude of UofL's achievements reach beyond Louisville into every corner of Kentucky and across the nation. Our alumni network is over 150,000 strong, with Cardinals living all over the Commonwealth of Kentucky, the United States, and around the world. At UofL, students learn from faculty members who are experts in their subject areas. Nearly 90% of full-time instructional faculty hold the highest degrees in their field.
Diverse and active student body
A diverse and active student body enriches the educational experience at UofL. Students of color represent over 28% of student enrollment and international students represent 4.2% of total enrollment. While Kentucky students account for the majority of the student population, more than 40% coming from Jefferson County, over 20% of UofL students are from more than 50 other US states and territories. More than 400 campus organizations help students meet new friends, develop leadership skills and explore new interests. Sports fans are able to enjoy Division I men’s and women’s athletics; UofL is a proud member of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).
Study Theatre Arts
As part of the College of Arts and Sciences, the Theatre Arts Department is committed to a liberal arts education for undergraduate students. The ancient art of theatre is most fully understood and exists at its deepest and most intimate level through the creation of performances shared with an audience. Doing so demands a deep array of knowledge and skill combined with a professional attitude and work ethic that can serve students throughout their lives in whatever profession they choose.
We believe that these goals, abilities, and attitudes should be evident daily in both our classrooms and our rehearsal rooms. Students who internalize this way of thinking and working are prepared extraordinarily well for any goal they pursue in the future.
The Theatre Arts department fosters creativity, collaboration, discipline, and artistic growth in its students and embraces the theatre as a means of creative expression, cultural understanding, social development, and historical perspective.
The Bachelor of Science in Theatre Arts is a 60-hour intensive study liberal arts program. With four core areas of study (Theatre History and Literature, Performance, Design and Production, African American Theatre), every student receives a broad base of study in all aspects of Theatre Arts. In addition, students have the opportunity to tailor their studies to specific areas of interest with 15-18 hours of program electives; they also use their class studies in practical application through lab work on Mainstage productions.
In addition, Theatre Arts offers 19-hour program minor options, with the opportunity to focus studies in a specific area, as well as a Minor in African American Theatre. In order to apply for a minor, a student must already have an approved major on record.
Acceptance into the undergraduate program does not require an audition. Upon admission to the university, apply for the major online with the college Academic Advising office. Approval from the college usually comes within 6-8 weeks, followed by a welcome letter from the Theatre Arts department that also will provide more information and the assignment of a Theatre Arts advisor.
Undergraduate work scholarships are available in technical production. Approved majors and minors are eligible to apply after completion of a Stagecraft class. Federal Work-Study positions are also available dependent upon eligibility requirements through the Office of Financial Aid.
